The Power and Purpose of Womanhood
The female is far more complex than we’ve been led to believe. Perhaps the hardest part about being a woman is that even we don’t fully understand ourselves. We are spiritual and emotional beings with the extraordinary ability to bring forth life. With that gift comes a host of biological and environmental responsibilities.
Women are powerful. We hold the ability to create life—yet it is man who initiates this process. We understand this on a physical level, but rarely do we pause to consider what it means for us energetically and spiritually. What does this connection between mind, body, and soul truly signify?
Rediscovering Meaning in Modern Times
In today’s world, many women have lost sight of the deeper meaning and purpose of our existence from a spiritual perspective. Menstruation, for example, is often viewed as an inconvenience—a time of discomfort, pain, and resentment. For years, I dreaded my cycle. I even used a period app to count down the days until its return.
That changed when I began to grow spiritually. After having my son, I tried several times to return to birth control, but something within me resisted. I would start and stop, or avoid taking the prescription altogether. Eventually, I told my doctor I no longer wanted birth control. Despite the raised eyebrows, I stood firm in my decision. At first, I didn’t understand why—but now I see the connection between my spiritual journey and my rejection of birth control.
Listening to My Body and Spirit
Spiritual growth taught me to listen—not just to my intuition, but to my body. Over time, I’ve become more sensitive than ever before. My senses—eyes, ears, even my hair (yes, locs truly feel like antennas)—have heightened. The same is true for my menstrual cycle. For example, my breasts become so tender it feels like tiny jolts of electricity. Emotionally, I’m more sensitive the week before my period due to hormonal fluctuations.
I used to think this heightened sensitivity was just emotional volatility. But I’ve learned it’s much deeper than that. My emotions during this time are real and valid. Menstruation is when my mind-body-soul connection is strongest. It’s a time when my emotions cannot—and should not—be suppressed.
Menstruation as a Superpower
Today, I see my cycle as a superpower. It acts as a mental and emotional check-and-balance system. My amplified emotions are signals, guiding me to pay attention to my intuition. Whether I feel joy, sadness, or anger, it’s all for a reason. My menstrual cycle is an opportunity to look inward, to reflect, and to grow.
Ladies:
Our cycles are not a curse—they are a gift. They remind us of our power, our sensitivity, and our connection to life itself. When we embrace this truth, we reclaim a part of ourselves that the world often tells us to ignore.
